Hispanic Heritage Month

By Tamera Escamilla

This month is the celebration of Hispanic Heritage, celebrated from September 15th to October 15th in the United States. This was enacted into a law on August 17, 1988. Hispanic Heritage Month originated in California and was started in 1968 by Congress.

Beginning under President Lyndon Johnson, it was originally only celebrated for one week. President Ronald Reagan then expanded it to a month-long celebration in 1988. Hispanic Heritage is celebrated in many ways. Some popular ways of celebrating are going to concerts, parades, running, marathons, festivals, conferences, community gatherings, or going to an art exhibit.
